Getting between Dusseldorf Airport and your hotel sounds like the simplest part of a trip, and usually it is. The exceptions are predictable enough to plan around: fair weeks, late arrivals, and hotels that turn out not to be in Dusseldorf at all.
Your three options
Hotel shuttles
Some airport-area hotels run their own shuttle. Where it exists it is often free, and if your hotel is one of them, use it. The limits are worth knowing before you rely on it: shuttles typically run on a fixed loop at set intervals, stop at night, and serve only the immediate airport district. If your flight lands at 23:30, the shuttle you were counting on may have finished for the day.
The taxi rank
Directly outside arrivals, no booking needed, and perfectly sensible for a short hop to a city-centre hotel in the middle of the day. The fare runs on the municipal meter, so it varies with traffic, and the queue lengthens sharply after banks of arrivals and when a trade fair closes.
A pre-booked transfer
Door to door to the hotel entrance at a price agreed before you fly, with your driver tracking the flight and waiting in arrivals with a name sign. The practical advantage is not speed — it is that nothing about it degrades when your flight is late or the city is busy.
The trade-fair problem
This is the situation that catches business travellers out. During boot, ProWein, MEDICA or a large Koelnmesse event, Dusseldorf hotels fill completely and rates rise steeply. The overflow lands in Neuss, Ratingen, Duisburg, Krefeld, Essen — occasionally Cologne.
Those are all easy drives, but they change the transport question entirely. You are no longer taking a ten-minute taxi to a hotel near the Hauptbahnhof; you are making a 25 to 45 minute cross-region trip, often twice a day, at exactly the hours when everyone else wants a car.

Late arrivals
Dusseldorf is well served in the evening but not indefinitely. Public transport thins after midnight, hotel shuttles stop earlier than most guests assume, and the taxi rank after a delayed long-haul arrival is a queue of tired people with the same idea.
A pre-booked car is measured from your actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with 120 minutes of free waiting included. For a flight that is already an hour late at 23:00, that difference is the entire point.
Booking it properly
- Give the hotel name and full address. Chains have several properties in the region and "Marriott Dusseldorf" is not unambiguous.
- Add your flight number. This is what enables tracking; without it we are guessing at your landing time.
- Book the return at the same time. Departure-day pickups from a hotel are the easiest thing to forget and the most annoying to arrange at 05:00.
- Say how many bags. Four adults with four large cases is a van, not a saloon, and it is better to know in advance.
- Check the hotel entrance. Large conference hotels sometimes have a separate arrivals entrance from the main door.
