Messe Dusseldorf is one of the busiest exhibition centres in the world, and it sits about 7 km from Dusseldorf Airport — roughly a 15-minute drive. On paper that makes it the easiest fairground in Germany to reach. In practice, the geography is only half the story: the other half is what happens when a hall empties.
Why proximity is not the whole answer
A major Dusseldorf fair can put tens of thousands of visitors on the site in a single day. They arrive across a wide morning window, which the transport system absorbs well. They leave in a narrow one, which it does not. The taxi rank at closing time is a queue measured in tens of minutes, and it forms precisely when you have a dinner reservation, a flight, or the end of your patience.
That asymmetry is the entire practical argument for pre-booking during a fair. The 15-minute drive does not change; the wait to start it does.

Dusseldorf's calendar mixes annual shows with multi-year cycles, which is why hotel prices in the city can look inexplicable until you check what is on.

Getting from DUS to the fairgrounds
By car or transfer — about 15 minutes
Both the airport and the Messe sit in the north of Dusseldorf, so the drive is short and does not cross the city. A pre-booked transfer takes you to the specific entrance you need rather than a general drop-off — on a site this size, arriving at the wrong end of the halls costs a real walk.
By public transport
There are bus and rail combinations from the airport to the Messe/Arena area, and during major fairs the service is reinforced. It works well outbound in the morning. It is markedly less pleasant at closing time, in a suit, in November.
Planning transfers around a fair
- Book the return before you arrive. The closing-time crush is predictable, so plan for it rather than react to it.
- Give the hall or entrance, not just "Messe". The site is large and entrances are far apart.
- Add your flight number. Fair weeks concentrate arrivals; flight tracking means a delayed landing does not lose you the car or cost extra.
- Book early for the big editions. During MEDICA, boot and ProWein, vehicles across the whole city are committed well in advance.
- Think about the whole week, not single rides. For an exhibitor team, an hourly chauffeur across the run of the fair is usually simpler and cheaper than a series of separate bookings.
For exhibitors
Exhibiting is a different transport problem from visiting. You have equipment, a stand team arriving on different flights, client hospitality in the evening, and a build-up and break-down day at either end when the site is at its most congested.

Dusseldorf hotels sell out during the largest fairs, and many visitors end up in Neuss, Duisburg, Essen, Krefeld or even Cologne.
