Dusseldorf Airport sits about 8 km north of the city centre — one of the shortest airport-to-city distances of any major German airport. That short distance changes the calculation: no option is slow, so the decision comes down to luggage, group size and the hour.
It also produces the single most common point of confusion at DUS, which is worth clearing up before anything else.
The two stations, and the monorail
DUS has two separate railway stations plus a free monorail that connects them. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one costs you fifteen minutes and some dignity.

So: if you want central Dusseldorf, walk down to the S-Bahn station under the terminal and take the S11. If you want a different city by rail, ride the SkyTrain to the long-distance station. The SkyTrain itself is a shuttle within the airport complex and nothing more — its name suggests otherwise to a lot of arriving passengers.
The S11 in practice
The S11 runs from beneath the terminal to Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof in roughly 13 minutes, at normal local transit fares. For one or two people with hand luggage heading somewhere near a station, it is genuinely the best option and nothing we sell beats it.
Its limitations are the ordinary limitations of urban rail: it is station-to-station, so you finish your journey with whatever walk, tram or taxi remains; steps and escalators are involved; it is a per-person fare with no meaningful group rate; and late at night the frequency drops.

Directly outside arrivals, no booking, metered fare. For a short trip into the city it is a reasonable choice — commonly in the region of €25–35, though that is indicative rather than a quote, since the meter responds to traffic and the city sets the tariff.
The queue is the variable. After a bank of arrivals or when a trade fair closes, waiting for a taxi can take longer than the drive.
Private transfer
Door to door on the A44 in 15 to 20 minutes, at a price agreed before you book, with your driver meeting you in arrivals. It is priced per vehicle for up to eight passengers, so the comparison against per-person rail fares changes completely once you are travelling as a family or a group.

A note on the drive
The A44 gets you into Dusseldorf quickly outside peak hours. During the morning and evening rush, and especially in trade-fair weeks, allow more. On a fixed-price transfer that traffic is our problem — the price does not move — but it is still worth building the buffer into your own plans if you have somewhere to be.
