Not every journey starts and ends at the same airport. A cancelled connection, a self-connect itinerary built from two separate tickets, or simply a cheaper outbound from a different hub can leave you needing to move between airports — with luggage, and usually against a clock.
It is a situation where road transport quietly outperforms rail, because you are not changing trains with four suitcases and because the car leaves when you are ready rather than when the timetable says.

When this is the right call
A broken connection
If you have missed an onward flight and the rebooking is from a different airport, the drive is often faster than the rail alternative and considerably less stressful. We time the departure against your inbound and build in a check-in buffer at the far end.
Self-connect itineraries
Booking two separate tickets can be much cheaper than one through-fare, but it makes the gap between them your responsibility — no airline will protect a connection it did not sell. A pre-booked car between the airports turns the risky part of that plan into the predictable part.
Split outbound and return
Flying out from Dortmund on a cheap fare and returning into Dusseldorf is a common pattern, and it leaves you needing one transfer at the end. Book it with the outbound so it is not a problem you solve while tired.
Frankfurt: the long one
DUS to FRA is 227 km down the A3, roughly 2 hours 46 minutes without heavy traffic. The A3 is one of Germany's busiest corridors and it can be slow around Cologne and the Westerwald, so this route deserves a real buffer rather than an optimistic one.
For a genuinely tight connection, the ICE between the two airports is worth comparing — both have long-distance stations. The car wins on luggage, on door-to-door certainty, and when there are several of you; the train can win on a clear run when you are travelling light.
How to book it properly
- Give both flight numbers. The inbound sets the pickup; the outbound sets how much buffer we build.
- Say which terminal at the far end. Frankfurt in particular is large enough that the terminal matters.
- Count the bags honestly. Airport-to-airport moves are the bookings most likely to involve full luggage.
- Tell us if the connection is tight. We would rather plan a departure time around a real deadline than discover it en route.
