Amsterdam is one of the most-booked long-distance runs out of Dusseldorf, and the reason is the awkward middle distance: at about 225 km via the A3 and A12 it is close enough to drive comfortably, but far enough that people feel they ought to consider flying.
The three options, measured door to door
Headline times mislead on this route, so it is worth being honest about the whole journey rather than the fastest segment of it.

The car is the only option where the advertised time and the actual time are the same number, because there is nothing either side of the drive.
Why flying rarely wins here
On paper a sub-hour flight looks decisive. In practice you need to be at Dusseldorf Airport well before departure, clear security, board, fly, wait for bags and then get from Schiphol into central Amsterdam. Add the fare, and for anything other than a solo traveller who happens to find a cheap seat, the maths does not hold up.
Train versus car
The Intercity is a good service and for a solo traveller with a small bag it is the sensible default — comfortable, productive, and cheaper than a car for one person.
The car changes the calculation on three specific counts:
- Group size. The fare covers the vehicle for up to eight passengers, not each person. For a family or a team, this is usually where the comparison flips.
- Luggage. No lifting cases onto racks, no carrying them across a station concourse at either end.
- Door to door. You start at your address and finish at your hotel, not at Amsterdam Centraal with a further journey ahead of you.
The drive itself
The route runs on the A3 to the Dutch border and then the A12 towards Utrecht and Amsterdam — motorway almost the whole way, with no border stop inside the Schengen area. Tolls and any vignette are inside the fixed price.
Traffic around Utrecht and the approach to Amsterdam is the variable worth knowing about; Dutch motorways are busy and the ring roads can be slow at peak times. On a fixed price that is our problem, not a supplement.
Common variations
- Airport to city. DUS to Amsterdam — 221 km, ~2h 42min, useful when you fly into Dusseldorf because the fare or schedule was better than flying to Schiphol.
- Airport to airport. DUS to Schiphol — 232 km, ~2h 50min, for connections and split itineraries.
- Cruise departures. Amsterdam is a common embarkation port, and cruise luggage is exactly the scenario a car suits best.
Booking notes
Give the full destination address rather than just "Amsterdam" — the city's canal district has real access restrictions, and knowing the address in advance means your driver takes the right approach rather than circling. If you are heading for a cruise terminal or a specific hotel entrance, say so.
