This is the one part of the Ruhr where the answer genuinely is not automatic. Dortmund Airport (DTM) is right there — about 13 km from Dortmund city centre. Dusseldorf is 72 km away, roughly 53 minutes via the A52 and A2. From Bochum, DUS is closer at 46 km (~34 min), with DTM around 45 km in the other direction.
What Dortmund Airport is for
DTM is a small, efficient, low-cost airport and it does that job well. Wizz Air, Ryanair and Eurowings have built a network out of it that leans heavily towards Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey and the Mediterranean. If you are flying to Katowice, Bucharest, Palma or Antalya on a budget fare, DTM will very likely be cheaper, closer and quicker through security than anywhere else.
It is also a genuinely pleasant airport to use precisely because it is small — you are not walking twenty minutes to a gate.
What it is not for
DTM has no long-haul network to speak of, limited full-service presence, and far fewer daily frequencies on the routes it does fly. That matters in three specific situations:
- Intercontinental travel. There is no realistic direct option; you will be connecting through a hub, and if you are connecting anyway you may as well start where the hub flights are.
- Business travel with a fixed schedule. One or two flights a day to a destination is fine for a holiday and useless for a meeting.
- Anything requiring a full-service carrier — through-checked bags, alliance status, flexible tickets, protected connections.

Bochum is the interesting case
Bochum sits almost exactly between the two, and the drive to Dusseldorf is actually shorter in time than the cross-Ruhr run to Dortmund Airport in most traffic conditions — 46 km on the A40 and A43, about 34 minutes. The hidden cost of the cheap fare
Budget airlines price the seat and charge for everything else, and the gap between the headline fare and the amount you actually pay is where most "which airport" decisions go wrong.
Before concluding that DTM is cheaper, add up the things that are bundled differently:
- Checked baggage, which is usually extra on a low-cost fare and included on a full-service one.
- Seat selection, if you are travelling as a family and would rather sit together.
- Change and cancellation flexibility, which matters more for business travel than the base fare does.
- The onward leg at the far end. Low-cost carriers often serve secondary airports, so a cheap flight to a city can land you an hour outside it.
- The lack of protection if things go wrong. On a limited network, a cancelled flight may mean waiting a day rather than catching the next one — DUS frequency is itself a form of insurance.
None of this makes DTM the wrong answer. It frequently is the right one, particularly for leisure travel where the dates are flexible and you are travelling light. It just means the comparison is between total costs, not headline fares — and once bags and flexibility are in the sum, the gap is often much narrower than it first looked.
