Everyone wants the cheap option, and most advice on the subject is just an advert. So here is a list that includes the cases where you should not book us, because a guide that only points one way is not a guide.
1. Count heads before you compare prices
This is the single biggest lever and most people get it backwards. Rail is priced per person; a private transfer is priced per vehicle for up to eight. One traveller comparing a train ticket to a whole car will always conclude the train is cheaper — and be right. Four travellers doing the same comparison usually reach the opposite conclusion. Compare total cost for your actual party, not headline prices.
2. Book outside the 24-hour window
Short-notice bookings can attract a surcharge, and our booking form deliberately opens on a pickup time 24 hours ahead for exactly that reason — so nobody idly checking a price is quoted a surcharged figure they never asked for. Booking a day or more in advance simply avoids it.
3. Do not pay for a bigger vehicle than you need
A van costs more than a saloon. If four of you are travelling with cabin bags, book the class that fits rather than the one that feels safer. Vehicle capacities are published for exactly this reason — and if you genuinely do exceed a single vehicle, the system ranks multi-car combinations cheapest-first rather than defaulting to the largest option.
4. Use the return leg
If you are flying out and back, book both directions. It is one arrangement rather than two, and it removes the classic expensive mistake: arriving at 23:40 with no plan and taking whatever is at the rank.
5. Check whether your route is short
Some of the cheapest transfers in the region are the ones people assume will be expensive. Krefeld is 21 km from DUS, Mülheim 22 km, Duisburg 25 km, Essen 32 km. Those are short, quick runs and priced accordingly — often far less than travellers expect before they check.
6. Take the S11 — when it suits you
Here is the honest one. If you are travelling alone or as a couple with light luggage in the middle of the day, and your destination is near Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof or another S-Bahn stop, the S11 is the cheapest way into the city and takes about 13 minutes. Nothing we offer beats it on price for that specific trip. Take the train.
7. Know when "cheap" costs more
The false economies at DUS are consistent and predictable:
- Taking a metered taxi on a long route across NRW and discovering the total at the end.
- Booking a ride-hailing app for a 06:00 departure and finding surge pricing, or no car at all.
- Planning to use public transport for a flight that lands at midnight, when services have thinned out.
- Buying four separate rail tickets for a family, then paying again in stress at the changes.
What actually makes a fixed price cheap
Not a discount code — the absence of extras. Luggage, tolls, night hours, public holidays, waiting after a delayed flight and the whole passenger group are already inside the quoted number. There is no second invoice, and no version of the trip where the price you were shown was optimistic.
